The Myth of Dan-gun

Once there were a bear and a tiger. They wanted to become human. So Hwan-ung, a god, came to Korea. And Hwan-ung said to them, “If you want to become a human you have to eat only garlic and mugwort for 100 days.” So they tried to eat only garlic and mugwort.

A few days later, the tiger couldn’t stand it anymore and gave up. But the bear stood to the last moment. So the bear became a woman. Her name is Eungnea. The woman then got married with Hwan-ung and they had son, Dan-gun. Dan-gun founded a country called Gojoseon. He governed Gojoseon for 3,000 years. Their children are our ancestors.
